America Needs More Geriatricians
AMERICA NEEDS MORE GERIATRICIANS
As the number of senior citizens in America continues to grow, the need for doctors who specialize in the care of geriatric patients is dwindling. Senior citizens account for nearly half of all hospital admissions and use more healthcare than any other age group, but geriatricians make up about one percent of physicians in the U.S. according to the American Geriatrics Society.
Research indicates that geriatricians manage older patients better than doctors without such training. This leads to lower inpatient mortality rates, shorter hospital stays, and reduced patient costs. Some doctors believe that the lack of knowledge and incentives to enter the field of geriatrics is to blame for the lack of physicians despite the urgent need for them.
“The vast majority of older people are getting care from people who have little to no training in the care of older adults,”
