What if Hospice Services Weren’t Just for Final Moments?
WHAT IF HOSPICE SERVICES WEREN’T JUST FOR FINAL MOMENTS?
For most Medicare patients, receiving in-home hospice care requires the decision to forgo treatments for chronic or terminal illnesses. In 2016, Medicare launched a pilot program allowing patients to receive both hospice care and treatments allowing them to improve their quality of life at home.
An independent evaluation of the pilot - the Medicare Care Choices Model - says results found that participants were able to stay out of the hospital and live longer at home than a comparison group while also saving Medicare money.
“Hospice is more or less when you’re ready to die. I just wanted to work my way back to doing as much as I could.”
