FEARS ABOUT LONG-TERM HEALTH EFFECTS PLAGUE EAST PALESTINE OHIO AFTER TRAIN DERAILMENT
Back in February 2023, it was hard to miss the news about the 150-car East Palestine train derailment that was carrying more than a million pounds of hazardous chemicals.
Even now, the impacts are hard to measure with residents still being displaced months later and many feeling distrustful of how the accident has affected the nearby soil, water, and air due to early communications around the incident.
“The disaster in East Palestine is particularly difficult to untangle. At least six hazardous substances were on the derailed cars. The chemical combinations may have had different effects than any single chemical alone. One chemical, vinyl chloride, was burned to get it off the train, and that may have created a slew of other issues.”
Those affected, along with visitors to the area have experienced “scratchy” throats, headaches, burning in their noses, nausea, coughing, and chest pain.
