Lack of Red Cross Blood Donations Could Impact Hospitals
Hospitals nationwide depend on blood donations from the American Red Cross, but extreme temperatures, severe weather, and other factors are threatening to significantly impact elective surgeries and emergency departments.
Over the past two decades, the American Red Cross has seen a 40% decline in blood donations. Even more alarming is the 25% decrease since July alone.
"In the month of July, we actually had between 17 to 19 thousand new units that we were thinking that we were going to collect, but we were not able to collect.”
