Boston Hospital Has Success With Getting More Patients from ER to Hospice
A new initiative at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston is showing promising results in transitioning end-of-life patients from the emergency room to hospice care. Since the program's launch, 54% of ER patients nearing the end of life have been moved to hospice care within 96 hours, a significant increase from the 22% rate before the program started in 2021.
These findings suggest that similar programs could help ensure that terminally ill patients receive timely hospice care, reducing delays and improving their quality of care at the end of life.
"Importantly, the program facilitates timely transition to hospice care as early as when they present to the ED, which is crucial during this current period of capacity crisis, in which patients have experienced delays in receiving care,"
