Nutritional Shakes Sold to U.S. Nursing Homes Recalled After Listeria Outbreak Linked to Several Deaths
At least 12 people have died and 38 others have been hospitalized after consuming frozen supplement shakes linked to a listeria outbreak, according to health officials.
The recalled shakes, sold under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, were distributed to institutional customers, including hospitals and long-term care facilities, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Friday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traced listeria cases linked to these products as far back as 2018, though investigators had previously been unable to pinpoint the source. A voluntary recall has been issued for certain Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial frozen supplemental shakes. Facilities that purchased the affected products have been instructed to discontinue use and thoroughly sanitize any surfaces or containers they may have come into contact with.
“Records reviewed from facilities indicated nutritional shakes were available to residents”
