Florida Now to Require Dementia Training for Law Enforcement

Florida House Bill 801 now requires law enforcement and corrections officers to complete ongoing Dementia training in partnership with the Department of Elder Affairs. The training is focused on creating more meaningful interactions between law enforcement and those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias.

The training aims to cover a range of topics, including:

  • Recognizing common behavioral symptoms

  • Utilizing effective communication techniques

  • Exploring alternatives to physical restraints, and

  • Identifying signs of abuse, neglect, or exploitation

With compassion and care at the center of this training, officers will be better equipped to support vulnerable community members with dignity and respect.

The key to successful mitigation of any emergency is preparedness. CHUG members have access to a comprehensive suite of educational workshops that leverage real-life case studies to teach members how to effectively respond in the face of adversity. Having this training can literally be lifesaving. Not a member yet? Become a member today >
